TREASURY CHAMBERS,

th

27 December 1895,

1326

Sir,

The Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury

ال

have had before Them Mr Fairfield's letter of the 13th instant (No21955), relative to periodically valuing the securities deposited by the Chartered Bank of India China and Australia in connection with the Bank's note-issue in Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements.

In reply, I am to request you to state to Mr Secretary Chamberlain that They are obliged for the suggestion that the Crown Agents for the Colonies should undertake an annual valuation of the securities of this Bank on the

lines followed by them in connection with the securities deposited under similar circumstances by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Having regard, however, to the provisions of the Bank's recent Supplemental Charter, My Lords consider that any application to the Bank to deposit additional securities should be made through This Board; and They would therefore be glad that the results of the Crown Agents' annual valuation may be communicated to this Department for such action as cir-

-cumstances may require.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

The Under Secretary of State

Colonial Office.
